Let’s dive deeper into the enchanting world of storytelling. Think of it as the heartbeat of every great learning experience. It’s the spark that awakens even the sleepiest of subjects, turning them into exciting adventures.
Storytelling isn’t just a tool; it’s the heart and soul of education. It’s the unsung hero that can captivate, inspire, and bring life to learning.
So, why are stories so important in education?
Engagement
Stories are like magnets, pulling you in and keeping you captivated.
Retention
Stories are a bit like a familiar tune; once in your mind, they become unforgettable.
Comprehension
Tangled webs of complex facts become clear and straightforward.
Emotion
A good story can make you laugh, cry, or even ache with understanding.
Now, with AI making things smoother, you might want to think about tapping into its potential for your initiatives.
Elevate Your Stories with AI
AI has revolutionized the way instructional designers approach storytelling in e-learning. Let’s take a closer look at some handy tools that speed up the storytelling process.
Click on the tabs below to view the tools.
ChatGPT
Sources info from 2021 and before.
Functions like a chatbot with a natural conversation flow.
Has memory that allows it to remember earlier comments.
In this example, we will be using the popular tool ChatGPT to create our story.
For our particular example, we used ChatGPT to create a story based on the topic of ‘managing work-related stress and burnout.‘
View the video we generated for this case study.
You can follow these steps and make your very own story and video too.
1. Building The Story
Let’s say you’re developing a course on managing work-related stress and burnout. You want to write a mini story to set up a scenario where an employee is exhausted and needs to have a conversation with his boss.
a) Setting the stage
Use this prompt and tweak it to your preference.
Write a short story about [preferred story outline]
This is the prompt we used to generate a response.
Write a short story about a young employee who’s struggling to manage his priorities. His workload keeps increasing, and on top of that, his boss now wants him to handle additional responsibilities as well.
Hmm, perhaps the short story is too lengthy. No worries, this is now the time to refine your prompt and fine-tune the response.
b) Fine tuning
Let’s add a max amount of words to the prompt to make the story more succinct.
Write a short story about [preferred story outline] under [desired length]
This is the prompt we used to generate a response.
Write a short story about a young employee who’s struggling to manage his priorities. His workload keeps increasing, and on top of that, his boss now wants him to handle additional responsibilities as well' in under 300 words.
That refined the story a lot more and made it short, yet relatable.
c) Refining
Better yet, you can refine further and give ChatGPT some more details to make the story even better.
Assuming the role of an HR professional, write a short story about [preferred story outline] under [desired length].
This short story is for a course on [topic]. Please use the appropriate learning design model to formulate the case study.

Assuming the role of an HR Professional, please write a short story in under 200 words about ‘a young employee who’s struggling to manage his priorities. This story is for a section in a course about managing work-related stress and burnout.
Now, you now have a very workable outline of a story, which you can fine-tune and use in your content.
2. Bringing Your Story to Life with a Short Video
Here are the key steps to produce a video resembling the one above that showcases the story crafted by ChatGPT. For this case, we used Midjourney to generate the images and Canva to bring it all together with text boxes and transitions.
a) Get your story ready
Now that you have the story generated by ChatGPT, take some time to go through it and make the necessary edits to tailor it to your preferences.
b) Generate images
You can use generative AI to create the images for your video. While we used Midjourney, you can use whatever is available to you. In our case, we created the characters and backgrounds with a comic book style, which was essential for the style we were going for.

c) Assemble on Canva
With your assets good to go, the next step is a breeze. Just upload your images to Canva, arrange them in the desired sequence, and feel free to add extra elements or text boxes as needed.
This is the second last step of the assembly process.

d) Add a voice (optional)
For our case, we added a voice over, but this step is entirely optional. You can choose to add music or sound effects as you see fit. After putting it all together, you now have a video to bring your story to life.
That’s how you get a video just like this!
