How We Created a Course with AI: ChatGPT + Midjourney + Photoshop

Read on to find out how we created an interactive gamified course called “Navigating Sustainable Living”

The Project

The purpose of our course is to allow users to select from various choices to navigate to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Overview of The Project

Throughout this creation process, we used the following AI tools to aid our processes.

ChatGPT

Sources info from 2021 and before.

  • Functions like a chatbot with a natural conversation flow.
  • Has memory that allows it to remember earlier comments.
  • Free

Midjourney

  • Generates high quality images based on text in various art styles.
  • Has an active community on Discord where users can share their creations.
  • Starts at USD$10/month.

Photoshop

  • Transform images with generative AI.
  • Instantly expand images.
  • Make large objects vanish.
  •  Starts at USD$59.99/mo

Heygen

  • Save time and money by avoiding the need for a studio, actors and equipment.
  • Hundreds of video templates to chose from, so you don’t start from scratch.
  • Starts at USD$24/month.

Canva

  • Transform images with generative AI.
  • Instantly translate your text with its’ inbuilt AI translator.
  • Add or replace anything in an image.
  •  Starts at USD$29.99/mo

We went through 4 steps to create this course. In this blog, we’ll go through the steps in detail.

Planning

Planning is essential for any project. We used ChatGPT to plan out the game and feedback.

Image Generation

We generated images for the course using Midjourney and used its readily available library.

Image Iterations

Once we had the images ready, we made fixes and added elements to them with Photoshop.

Video Generation

With everything done, we made videos with Heygen and Canva for our game as feedback.

1. Planning the Project

First, following any great project, we went through the planning stage.

With the idea and topic ready, as well as the scope, we leveraged ChatGPT to lay the groundwork. We shared our topic, and prompted ChatGPT to assume the role of an ID to acquire better answers, with a thought out process.

In no time, ChatGPT responded with a comprehensive course overview, and ideas for the course, like animated videos, a gamified ‘meet the heroes’ section, an interactive data map and even pop up messages throughout the game.

a) Setting the stage

This is the prompt we used to generate a response.

You are an instructional designer.

Please create an interesting and practical mini course demo using gamification and storytelling elements. It should be on a sustainability topic - specifically to promote awareness and what individuals can do to foster a sustainable life.

Read more here on how you can use ChatGPT with content development tasks such as needs analysis, research, storyboarding, creation, and assessment.

b) Fine tuning

Moving on with a clearer idea of our own, we prompted ChatGPT with a genuine direction. We wanted the course to be a more gamified experience with lots of images and videos, so we reflected this need to ChatGPT to acquire a more focused approach and possible storyboard.

This is the prompt we used to generate a response.

This course needs to be more graphical focused with hover points.

Please create a story for this course to follow in a linear manner. For example: Letting people select between student or adult, then basing their surroundings on their choice. Essentially creating a branching experience.

Once we got the storyboard ready and the possible responses for the characters in the course, we moved on to image development.

2. Generating the Images

We browsed Midjourney for possible inspiration and generated images for each section of the storyboard.

In this case, we needed to generate at least 6 photos.

  • A driveway
  • A living room
  • A supermarket
  • A cafeteria
  • A shop
  • An art class

Instead of spending hours searching for the right images (or hiring a creative team for the imagery,) we were able to find them in minutes.

We found the relevant images on Midjourney and then moved on to the fun part. Creating iterations with Photoshop’s Generative AI.

Once we got the storyboard ready and the possible responses for the characters in the course, we moved on to image development.

3. Creating Image Iterations

Once we had the images ready for the characters and their backgrounds, we moved on to Photoshop to develop alternatives of the images to be able to form the selection part of the game.

This is the prompt we used to generate a response.

In the example above, one of the choices for people to click on was ‘ plant more at home’, so after extending the image with AI, we also hovered the select tool over a spot and generated ‘plants’ for that spot.

Following this logic, we used Photoshop to generate new points of contact for users to click on on each screen, with elements ranging from a bus, to a bicycle, to solar panels and even food choices.

Instead of manually having to find images and editing them in, we could just leverage AI to cleverly add visual interest to the images.

After this, we moved on to creating videos on Canva and Heygen.

4. Video Creation

We wanted a talking head video explaining the impact of a users choice, so we used Heygen to create those videos.

a) Generating the videos

We created the script and selected an avatar, then the voice and finally generated the talking head video.

After that, we used Canva’s new background removal function to remove the background for the talking head and added a frame next to it with stock footage and text to introduce another element of interest.

This way, the talking head video alone would not look too boring and had footage to accompany it.

b) Putting it all together

Once we assembled everything, we moved it to the course builder (Storyline) and created the game experience!
