E-learning is a dynamic field, constantly evolving to meet learners’ needs. Quizzes and activities play a crucial role in assessing learning and solidifying knowledge and skills. They allow us to gauge our grasp of subjects and reinforce what we’ve learned.

However, the traditional quiz creation process demands both time and effort.

But now, with AI making things smoother, you might want to think about tapping into its potential for your initiatives.

Case Study Using Quiz Gecko

Let’s say you’re making a fun quiz based on greek mythology. We will be using Quizgecko for this case study.

a) Through URL

Let’s say you have a blog/article or pre-existing content for this topic. You can simply insert your link on QuizGecko through the URL tab, and use the dropdown menu to select your question type.

In this case study, we pasted a blog posts’ URL in the box for it to generate questions.

b) Through a PDF

Now if you have a PDF or a doc instead, you can do the following.

QuizGecko’s upload function is a premium feature, but to bypass this, you can copy the text and paste it into the text dialogue, keep in mind that the limit is 1000 characters.

For this case, we used the content from a PDF we previously made, to be able to generate some questions, using the text from the first topic. We started with some easy MC questions.

2. Case Study Using ChatGPT

Now, let’s move on from Quiz Gecko and use ChatGPT to see if we can generate some questions as well, and tailor them to our needs.

a) On a Topic

Generally, when asking for multiple questions, your prompt should go as follows:

Create 10 multiple-choice questions testing people on [subject]. Please ensure that the correct answers are distributed evenly across the answer choices (a, b, c, d, etc.).

We used the following prompt:

Create 10 multiple-choice questions testing people on greek mythology. Please ensure that the correct answers are distributed evenly across the answer choices (a, b, c, d, etc.).

b) Through Pre-Existing Content

We can even give ChatGPT text from your pre-existing content and ask it to come up with questions. For this, you generally have the following flow, letting it absorb the text separately:

As a note, you should send the text separately so as to avoid an overload of information on ChatGPT’s part.

I will be sending you a piece of text. Please create [desired number of questions and types of questions]. Please respond with ‘I understand’ if I can send you this text.

We used this prompt before sending ChatGPT the text to make questions from.

I will be sending you a piece of text. Please create 5 medium-difficulty multiple-choice questions. Please respond with ‘I understand’ if I can proceed to send you this text.

Now, after sending in the text, we got the following result.

Using this small comparison, you can choose the tool best suited to your needs, and you now have questions that you can use in your course based on your content.

Challenges in AI-Powered Quiz Generation

While AI brings significant benefits to e-learning quiz creation, it’s essential to be aware of its limitations. Here is a major area where we need to jump in:

Accuracy

AI systems may struggle to grasp the full context, nuances, or subtleties of the subject matter. This can lead to questions that are too easy, too difficult, or off-topic, and even answers that might be incorrect. Careful examination is needed to ensure accuracy, as questions could sometimes be misleading.
